We are proudly serving the Roanoke Valley and surrounding counties. Co-owned by husband and wife team, Tara and Stephen Fisher, we are committed to being a fun, positive, and family friendly environment for people to learn and train jiu-jitsu.

Coach Stephen

Stephen began his Jiu-Jitsu journey in the summer of 2011 at age 18. His foundational training started with the James Madison University Jiu-Jitsu club team, leading him to earn his blue belt while training at Fairfax Jiu-Jitsu for two years. After relocating to Roanoke, VA, in 2018, Stephen continued to dedicate himself to the sport, earning his purple and brown belts under Professor Robert Hurd in Lynchburg VA.

Stephen is committed to sharing his deep passion for the sport. He is excited to guide his students while fostering the same positive communities and lasting friendships that have defined his decade plus commitment to jiu-jitsu.

Coach Tara

Tara began her Jiu-Jitsu journey at 28, and over the past 13 years of consistent training, the art has become her passion. She is currently an IBJJF-certified Brown Belt, representing a deep commitment to excellence. As she trains toward her black belt, Tara is excited to bring her love of the art and positive energy to the Roanoke community, fostering an environment where every student can grow.

Professor Michael Costello

Mike Costello earned his black belt from ZR Team, and now instructs and competes with Summit Jiu-Jitsu Academy. He has a total of 15 years of competitive and self-defense jiu-jitsu training. Mike is also an US Army Veteran certified in level three combatives. Mike instructs classes for our youth and adult programs, and specializes in competition-based training. His black belt accolades include bronze at No-Gi Pan Ams and multiple championship wins at several New Breed tournaments. Mike’s wife and kids are also active students with Summit!

All instructors and coaches at Summit Jiu-Jitsu Academy are First Aid/CPR certified, SafeSport certified, and background checked!
